Brazil Will “Find a Way” to be Ready – “Dar Um Jeito”

There have been many articles on Brazil and the World Cup preparations for 2014. Most of the articles have been about how far behind they are in their preparations and questioning whether they will be ready in time. They are behind in the renovation work on the 13 airports that will be used during the World Cup. Another report showed that out of the 12 host cities only about five cities have begun the infrastructure work that is needed. Another huge concern is whether the renovations of stadiums will be ready in time. There have been many articles discussing the renovations of the Maracana Stadium located in Rio de Janeiro and whether it will be ready in time. This stadium will be used to host the final match of the World Cup but the bigger worry is that it must be ready to stage the FIFA Confederations Cup in June of 2013.

When Brazil hosted the fourth World Cup in 1950 is was a very memorable event because it was the first one that followed World War II since it had to be canceled two years in a row. At that time Brazil was building the brand new Maracana Stadium which at the point was the largest in the world and there were similar fears on whether they would have the stadium done in time! The Brazilians made it and the stadium was completed a week before the World Cup kicked off! There were some unfinished areas of the stadium but for the most part it was complete.

Many Brazilians are known for being late or getting things done at the last minute. Brazil has a famous expression “dar um jeito” which translates “find a way”. This saying goes along with their mindset. They have the attitude of “we will find a way to make it happen, pull some strings, or figure out a solution”. Brazilians for the most part are positive people that don’t like to sweat the details of making things happen and don’t like to “lose their cool”! I lived in Brazil for many years and love the country and the people. I believe that Brazil will once again “dar um jeito” and get the job done and be ready for the World Cup in 2014.
