With the World Cup around two years away Brazil is buzzing with preparations for this big event. Many hotels in Brazil are being remodeled and new ones are being built. The city of Rio de Janeiro known as “Cidade Maravilhosa” or “Marvelous City” has been getting prepared for many tourists that the World Cup will bring. The police force has been making an effort to crackdown on crime and drug trafficking in several of Brazil’s slums (favelas). There was a concentrated effort in a favela called Mangueira that is on a hillside right next to the Maracana Stadium where the World Cup will be hosted. Back in June of 2011 the authorities warned the residents that they were arriving with more than 100 marines and 160 elite police officers along with many other officers. There were helicopters and more than a dozen tanks that plowed through the streets of this shanty town. Fortunately not one gun was fired during this police invasion. Several people commented that the violence had greatly improved and that Rio de Janeiro is much safer now. Let’s hope that it will stay that way even after the World Cup and Olympics

The city of Rio is also working on the infrastructure with new roads and new subway stations. Some of the future plans include getting new public bathrooms and workout stations at the famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. And for those that love to ride bicycles will enjoy renting a bike from the Paris-style bike stations that are going up all around the city. Plans include the ease of renting these bikes via text messaging or internet and being able to drop off the bike at any of the bike stations along the beach.

Not only is Brazil working hard to prepare for this event but other countries are also getting ready as well. There are many qualifying football tournaments going on all around the world in preparation for the World Cup. This qualification process limits the size of each association football team and secures the very best players for the final FIFA World Cup.

Many airlines around the world are extending their flights to South American and Brazil in anticipation for the upcoming World Cup. United Arab Emirates the largest airline in the Middle East has extended its flights to South America. There will be some new flights connecting Dubai with Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. American Airlines is going to increase flights from the U.S. to seven different Brazilian Cities. They are also going to increase their flights from Dallas, TX (DFW) airport to São Paulo, Brazil from seven to twelve flights per week beginning in June of this year.
